If you have fresh mushrooms that look like the ones pictured above, don’t eat them until you’ve confirmed that they haven’t been recalled for possible listeria.

Monterey Mushrooms of Watsonville, Calif., said the mushrooms were distributed from its plant in Temple, Pa., to Pennsylvania and six other Eastern states. The product was sold in 4-ounce, 6-ounce, 8-ounce, and 16-ounce foam containers and 10hyphen ounce plastic bags with code dates 237 through 247.

Listeria can cause serious illness, but no sicknesses have been reported.

Consumers that purchased these ’shrooms can return them for a full refund.

  2. It’s possible that they tested positive for Listeria innocua (the harmless type) and they are worried that some may carry Listeria monocytogenes (the dangerous type). If you cook them to over 160 degrees or so (or microwave them) you have nothing to worry about. If you want to eat them raw, I’d take them back and get my refund.
