Defining Your Goals
August 24, 2006 – 5:23 pmThe first step to achieving your goals is by setting them! If you don’t know what goal you’re working towards, you’ll have a harder time achieving it. A goal is a directional path that you’re moving towards and ultimately leads to your success.
First, you’ll need to define what your goal is. It could be related to your career, your education, or weight loss and fitness
If your goal is related to your career, you might wish to get promoted, to “get signed”, to increase your monthly sales, or to advance to a management position. Depending on your goal you might need to maintain perfect attendance, take a class, have a successful promoter, or make more successful sales calls. Then work hard to advance.
Education is set up in a timely manner. You can earn an Associates Degree by attending classes full-time for two years or a Bachelor’s Degree in four years. Other professions might have certification programs, internships, or hands-on training. Once you’ve passed your exams you can take your education and turn it into your profession.
If you’re focusing on weight loss and fitness, your goals might be to increase your endurance, to drink more water, to eat more fruits and vegetables or to lose 30 pounds. Making subtle changes to your diet and everyday routine can help you slim down. A radical change in your diet and exercise routine can burn a couple pounds per week.
In order to make a goal a reality, you should try to visualize yourself in the position (or shape) you want to be in. Picture yourself walking to receive your diploma, wearing a sexy outfit that looks good and makes you feel confident, or accepting a position at your dream job.
Set a date. Famous comedian Jim Carrey postdated a check to himself in the amount of 1 million dollars when he was going through a rough period in life. He did it to “feel better.” He held onto that check and had enough money to cash it a few years later. Although he never cashed it, it shows the power of intent. The check had to have a date!
Most importantly, never give up! Giving up can be easy to do, but successful people don’t give up. Despite the odds and abstacles winners will prevail and so can you!

I love this column. I personally will be using this advice. I have a lot of goals to achieve, so I appreciate the ready made plan you’ve presented me with. I’m definitely going to post date a check for myself. Thanks Heather!

You’re welcome, Rhonda.. thanks for commenting.
Goal setting reminds me of going for a vacation in a car. If you don’t have directions to get to your destination, chances are you’ll get lost somewhere along the way.
