5 Things You Can Do to Bust a Rut
August 21, 2006 – 11:10 amIf you ever find yourself in a “fixed, usually boring routine” you’re in what the American Heritage dictionary defines as a “rut.” Here are 5 suggestions for breaking out of a rut and getting on with life.
1. Search for a Solution. Try to think of creative (or even reasonable ways) to solve your problem at hand. If you can’t come up with a solution, discuss it with someone that might approach things differently than yourself.
2. Stimulate Your Mind. It’s important as we get older not to forget the importance of education. Consider taking an elective course at your local community college, or a hobby class like beading or dance. It’s never too late to teach old dogs new tricks.
3. Plan a Short “Getaway.” Sometimes removing yourself from your daily life can give you a fresh perspective on things. Make your getaway someplace that you’ll enjoy. If you like the hustle and bustle of the big city, make a day of it. If you prefer peace and solitude, the beach or a park might be more your style. Getting some fresh air and looking at your life from somewhere else in the world than you own home or workplace might provide you with an insight or two.
4. Consider volunteering for a worthy cause.Volunteering is something you can do that costs nothing more than your time. Volunteering is a very personal way to give something of yourself back to society and there are many opportunities available. Places like local schools, hospitals, the humane society, places of worship, and other organizations always welcome volunteers.
5. Don’t dwell. Dwelling on obstacles makes them seem larger than they really are. Try to come up with solutions, instead. Use the power of your mind to change you’re reality and reality will soon follow.
If you have a tip or two on busting out of a rut, I’d love to hear them!
