More Obese than Malnourished Children Worldwide
August 15, 2006 – 3:51 pmHere is an interesting turn of events. A conference of international experts has heard that the number of children suffering from malmourishment is down, but children suffering from obesity has steadily climbed, and is becoming a problem in urban areas of the world as well.
US Professor Barry Pokin had this to say:
The reality is that globally far more obesity than undernutrition exists. There are more than a billion overweight people in the world and 800 million who are undernourished. Obesity is the norm globally and undernutrition, while still important in a few countries and in targeted populations in many others, is no longer the dominant disease.”
They are urging governments to design economic strategies to influence national diets to help combat against it, and also urge consumers to eat healthier and get regular exercise.

Wow, and I thought that it was really sad the number of malnurished out there, but to me this seems a little worse. Obisiety is one of the health problems that in most people can be avoided or fixed.

It could end up being a bigger problem in the long run than too little food.

That’s true. The real problem might come from the extra care that the morbidly obese require. I think this could become a real concern for the healthcare industry.
The people that take care of them have to work a lot harder, I’m sure.
