Have you ever ate something because you were “bored”?
If so, you aren’t alone. Many people admit to eating because they were bored. I’ve made a list of suggestions for you to do the next time you feel like grabbing something to eat because of being in this state of mind.
1. Drink a Tall Cold Glass of Water. A lot of times we feel hungry when we’re actually thirsty. Drink a 12 ounce glass of ice cold water, and try another tip listed below.
2. Reach out and touch someone. Pick up the phone and give a friend or loved one a call. A conversation will engage your mind (and mouth) with words, not food.
3. Dance. Put on some of your favorite music and dance. Sing along if you want! Music and dance will lift your spirits and boredom will be kept at bay. Plus the movement will even burn a calorie or two.
4. Start a Journal. Put your feelings into words on paper. You might find that you’re a talented writer, and busy hands aren’t in a chip bag!
5. Go Outside. Take a walk, pull some weeds, enjoy the fresh air. Grab the kids and toss a frisbee for an hour. If you have a park nearby go and play on the swings. Getting outside of your living room, kitchen or bedroom will take you out of the moment, letting you focus on something else other than eating.
6. Sew, Crochet or Cross-Stitch. All of these hobbies require concentration and make use of your hands. They are all nice skills to have for making gifts or selling as a small business venture.
7. Do a few push up or sit ups. If we all did 50 push ups or sit ups everytime we said we were bored, we’d all be in better shape.
Seriously though, a dozen push ups or sit will help tone your tummy instead of filling it with food.
If you still find yourself feeling hungry, try snacking on fruits or vegetables. The healthier the snack, the better.
If you have any tips to help combat boredom eating, I’d love to hear them!
