Stopping your period.. forever?
May 22, 2006 – 2:27 pmFor some reason, the idea of this is fighting against human physiology, however it’s starting to gain popularity with women that don’t want to suffer with their “monthly cycle”.
This is being done by using birth control, like the Nuvaring, in ways other than they are directed to be used. The Nuvaring is a vaginal contraceptive ring that is used for 3 weeks and removed for one week, triggering a woman’s menstrual cycle. However, replacing the ring when the hormones run out with a new Nuvaring will stop your period from happening.
A 22 year old young lady hasn’t had a period since she was 17, and she’s happy about it.
Dr. Mindy Wiser-Estin, a gynecologist from Little Silver, New Jersey said she did it for years and that “There’s no reason you need a period.”
I’m not a doctor, but this seems like something that could cause problems, since no studies have been done to see what side effects doing this might have. I know that when I was on Triphasil, (a birth control pill that cycled 21 days on and 7 days off) came with a number of warnings about the potentials for health problems with prolonged use. I can’t imagine that this form of birth control is any different.
I’d imagine that the pharmaceutical companies can’t be held responsible if health problems arise after misusing their drugs. Or at least I hope so..
