The Tortoise and the Hare
May 12, 2006 – 7:40 amDo you remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?
If you don’t, let me refresh your memory.
The tortoise and the hare were in a race, and whoever made it to the finish line first won.
Obviously, the hare had an advantage over a slow moving tortoise in a race like this. But the tortoise had perseverance and determination, something that the hare didn’t. When the hare ran into some obstacles, the tortoise slowly plodded along, eventually beating the hare and winning the race.
So what does this have to do with weight loss?
The fact that slow and steady wins the race.
I think that in today’s society, everyone has become used to having whatever they want the moment they decide they want it.
When people decide they want to lose weight it isn’t that easy or fast. The day a person
becomes “aware” that they’re overweight by “X” number of pounds, they want them gone in a month.
Looking at things realistically, chances are the extra weight wasn’t put on in a month. It’s a cumulative weight gain that could have been triggered by many different things and has “crept” up on them.
Safe and long term weight loss comes through changing life habits.
Getting active through willed exercise and making the right food choices every day are the two most important things a person can do to start changing their body on the physical plane.
That’s why it’s best to take the tortoise approach to losing weight.
If you’d rather think like a hare, feel free to kick up your intensity and work a little harder!
Taking a healthy long term approach to improving your lifestyle is a more focused way to deal with “the weight”. Fix it quick methods usually end up being a neverending yo-yo of never quite getting it done once and for all.
