The name Diet Soda would suggest that it would not add pounds to your body. But there are experts who suggest that they are actually worse, because diet sodas contain aspartame, a sugar substitute that may be bad for your health. However there is good news for diet sodas. Recent studies conducted on 50,000 women reveal that real sugar used in non-diet sodas may be more dangerous in the long run than the sugar substitute used in diet sodas. The decade-long study compared women who drank one or more sugary soft drinks a day with those who drank them less than once a month.

These are the findings of the study. Women who drank the sugary soft drinks were not only more likely to gain weight, but they were also 83% more likely to develop Type-II diabetes, which can cause blindness and even death.

The situation is alarming. Americans are now getting as much as 7% of their calories from soft drinks. And research at Purdue University shows that we do not seem to exercise more to compensate for those extra calories that lead to weight gain. Now how much weight gain can happen? If we swap one can of regular cola for a diet cola per day, we immediately save around 135 calories. For 1 year, this becomes a whopping 49,000 calories, which is equivalent to over 14 pounds of weight.. all in a years time.

There are other studies as well which agree. According to a Danish study, when overweight adults were given about 600 calories a day of extra sugar, which is equal to about four 12-ounce cans of regular soda, the total calorie intake increased. Participants gained about 3.5 pounds in less than three months.

The verdict is thus out. Diet sodas will help you in dieting. Replacing sugar with low-calorie sweeteners will reduce calorie consumption and aid weight loss.
