Nopales, or cactus pads are often used in Mexican or Southwest dishes. Jicama can be used in salads. Chayote can be used like squash. Cassava can be used like a potato. Have fun experimenting with veggies you have never tried. Doing so can improve your nutrient intake and expand your food choices.
I have to say that I'm guilty of not exploring more fruit and veggies. I see all kinds of exotic looking fruits at the grocery store, but never buy them.
I should try to make an effort to "try" a new fruit or veggie every once and again, but I guess that I'm a creature of habit.
Bananas, Strawberries and apples are the staples I always seem to keep around.
Do you have any recipes for any of these fruits, or do you just eat them plain?
We do this in our house. I even get my kids to pick out something they'd like to try. We've added some new things into our diets this way. I have 2 very brave kids too that love trying new things. The kids love nopales (only the pickled kind though).
Have you tried celery root? Also called celeriac (not sure of the spelling) Very yummy, I boil it when making mashed potatoes, gives a nice hint of celery to the potatoes (use chicken broth to make it low fat instead of butter) Also I roast them with a little olive oil. Very yummy.
We try to mix up our diet by shopping at different types of grocery stores, asian markets, hispanic, italian, etc. You get a great mix of foods that way.
I'm going to look for Cassava next time I'm at the stores!
Yes, I have a couple of recipes and I will add them to the recipe site for you :)
That is awesome about your kids Ellie, most kids turn their noses up at veggies or anything new for that matter.
I have not realy tried anything new, but that is becuase i am not the shopper in the house. I wil ask him to pick up some new stuff for me to try this weekend.
