Basal Metabolic rate calculator - how many calories you expend no matter what you're doing. http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html Thought it could be useful for anyone who's counting calories. EllieFunt

bmr is the key to weight loss! it is the missing link!

Thanks Ellie! So the number that comes up is the number of calories minimum that your body burns in a day. Without doing anything extra, like getting out of bed :) Makes a lot of sense that if you burn a few extra calories through exercise, your body temperature increases and that lifts your BMR for the rest of the day, and you are bound to lose weight. Especially if you are careful about how many calories you eat.

that's why bmr is the secret weapon of weight loss! your burn calories while you sleep and its not because of some crappy over-priced product like body solutions.

According to this link, my BMR is 1869.8 But if I'm at my goal weight.. it drops to 1718.1? That doesn't make much sense... I would think if I were leaner my metabolism would be increasing and therefore my BMR would be higher not lower... ~sits a little confused~ AF lll

I think that is because as your body becomes leaner, it doesn't have as much energy (fat) to spend, lowering your BMR. If there isn't as much fat left to burn it can't keep up at that pace without destroying tissue. Same way that when you have a lot of weight to lose, the first few pounds will come off pretty quick. The closer you get to your goal weight, the harder you have to work to get there. I hope this helps explain a bit..

Well that really stinks.. the closer you get to your goal the harder you have to work.. ~sigh~ You would think it would be the reverse.. as your body gets used to dropping the weight, your metabolism would increase and it would be easier to shed pounds... ~shrugs~ AF lll

The lighter you are the less calories you expend while working out too! But let's face it, if you're already in shape then the stats become more meaningless.

It's the caveman thing. Our bodies are still pretty much as they were back in the cave days. We were designed to store fat for the famine that never comes. Back then you had to hunt and gather food. During the spring, summer and fall, food was probably pretty abundant, so when there was abundance, you stocked up for winter. Our bodies still pretty much the same. The only thing that has changed is the fact that "hunting and gathering" now means, get in your car and drive to "wherever" to buy whatever you want, need, crave. And most of the want, need, craves are high in calories and leave you wanting. (more)
