looks as if halloween must have thrown everyone over the edge. i will confess that i ate candy. the ghost is out of my closet.. :!:

i ate plenty of candy. but that is hardly news. i have to wash my laundry because i am out of "shirts that fit".

lol I ate candy too We did a pirate themed "haunted ship" at work, and they gave us gourmet chocolate coin "treasure" for helping out. They were so good! not the post-halloween hangover guilt trip  Sonja

I too had candy, but I only had a miniature twix and miniature almond joy. I figured I should give in and have a couple of pieces so I wouldn't dive head first into the bowl!

good job charity! i went and had a big brunch today also. now i am putting the skids on. i have until december 23rd to lose some weight before i go a vacation i have been dreaming about. i will be happy to lose 20 pounds. anything! i have failed like 4 times in a row and am pretty unimpressed with myself right now.

Ugh, it wasn't the candy...I wish it was only the candy... My friend had a huge buffet of food at her house when we got there. Cookies, blue cheese dip, bean dip, cheese, crackers, beer, wine, candy...the list goes on and on. I didn't go too crazy, but it definitely could have gone better. The whole month could have better. I'm starting over today. Anyone with me?

I'm with you lambchop!! I have already begun. I did 2 exercise tapes this morning. I found the Richard Simmons tapes at a garage sale this weekend and decided to take a rest from Tae-Bo and see what these have to offer. They are really low impact tapes and so far I like them. Here's to a new month!!!!!!!!! Charity

i'm with you lambchop! i'm glad to learn i wasn't alone. i cleaned up my act starting yesterday at around noon. i am going to do my level best to make a real go of it this time.

It's great to hear that everyone is getting back on track! The reason its so hard to stick to is that there are so many temptations out there every minute of every day. You just have to be strong. Charity, that proves you can find a great deal at a garage sale! A new month, A new you! :D

I ate my share of candy... and I threw a Halloween party on Nov. 1st, where I had some drinks and food I haven't been eating for a while. However, I also worked-out more and watched my caloric intake on other items to try to compensate for it. I may not have been perfect, but I didn't overindulge in the candy. Plus, I felt the treats will help keep me going on the diet (that is, if I eat some now and then, I won't feel like I'm "suffering"). Working-out also helped keep my weight at least steady for the week. But now Halloween is over. I plan on getting rid of extra candy and recommitting to my diet plan. I'll give myself one day (Thanksgiving) to indulge somewhat, but I feel it's best I get back to where I was in September (regarding dieting) so that I lose the amount I want by Christmas. :)

Therefore, don't resist them! I'm on a low-fat, low-cal diet. When I want something sweet, I eat raisins and prunes. Maybe these aren't cakes and candy, but I tell ya, they work! The fiber in them is definitely beneficial; plus, I tend to eat less of them. In other words, I satiate my sweet tooth, but in a healthy way. I also look for things made with Splenda. I even found some ice cream made with Splenda! So don't do Atkins or South Beach, just restrict your food intake. And replace candy with raisins and fruit. This, combined with some exercise will help you lose the weight. I'm going to be doing the same thing for the next 1.5 months. I let myself have a bit of fun for Halloween (see above post), but now, I'm going back to a tighter diet. I didn't lose 40 pounds just to gain it all back! I want to lose another 20 myself by the holidays. So back to a tight diet and more work-outs.

yeah i couldn't agree more doc. i am not going to mess with low carb anymore. the foods restrictions are too great for me to bear. i am a big fan of vegetables and fruit and i really can't stand cheese. i have pretty much already cut all dairy from my diet. i happened to visit milsucks.com and got turned off to it. my "problem" is two fold: 1) 3 or 4 good weeks followed by a binge on dessert 2) lengthy absences from exercise both of these are fixable and i plan on doing it. i will definitely be following a high water, high fruit, and high vegatable diet this around.

Binging on dessert every 3-4 weeks ain't so bad. On the [b:e383254e52]Chunk to Hunk[/b:e383254e52] web site, a man discusses dropping 170+ pounds in roughly 1.5 years. However, every Friday he'd let himself have fun! ;) That is, he'd indulge in his favorite foods - by his own admission sometimes eating as much as 10,000 calories that day! 8O Normally, this would be horrible for a person on a "diet", but clearly it worked for him. The trick, though, is to get exercise. He was really good at moving. He started out slowly (doing various pool exercises) and kept going. He didn't restrict any type of food per se, rather, he just limited his overall intake. That said, he still ate a LOT! See his "food" section on the page where he discusses his general meals. The trick for him was exercise. And I have to concur. Diet alone will not help you lose all the weight. I like this plan and I'm using it as a guideline. Initially I followed BowFlex's rather strict dietary plan. But I needed more variety and flexibility in my diet to ensure that I stuck to it. So I'm mixing things up more. I'm still going low-fat (I feel GREAT on a low-fat diet; whereas, I felt horrible on a high-fat Atkins-esque diet) and trying to get carbs from healthy sources (fruits, whole grains). But I still eat fat (from nuts and tuna) as they are essential. More importantly though, I exericise. I walk for 2 miles usually about 3x a week. I try to work-out as well for at least 20 minutes 3x a week. This way, when I do overeat or have something "bad" like candy, I won't feel so bad. So far, this plan is working. I still have a long way to go, but I'm definitely feeling and looking better. Hence, you might want to try it. Your diet is probably decent already - even with your cake binges. ;) Just get exercise into your life. Don't overdo it - take it slow at first and build up. I want both of us to lose 20 pounds by the holidays! Good luck to us! :D

Hi Doc! Exercise is really the key to being healthy. Eating well is also very important, but moving your body is it! In todays modern society you can take elavators, escalators, and fight for the closest parking spot, when in reality parking 50 feet away from an entrance isn't that much extra work, Walking a flight of steps isn't either. Point being, I believe that everyone here can accomplish what they have set out to do. Sure it may seem difficult sometimes, but it can be done! You can not get a college degree overnight, it takes years of work and study. Rome wasn't built in a day, either!

that is a very interesting idea and it might actually solve my problem. some sort of "allowed binge" so that i don't feel deprived is a good idea. i never have problems for 3 weeks or so. i can eat very little for 20 days no problem but then i tend to crank up the consumption for three or four days straight. after the 4 days i am right back to where i was a month ago. i guess the good thing is i am not gaining any weight, but i certainly am not accomplishing much as it pertains to weight loss.

Well, the type of "diet" that I am on is probably very different from everyone else because I'm in therapy. She's provided a ton of self-esteem for me, but more importantly, I'm finding ways to change my eating habits FOREVER. After the weight comes off, it will never, ever come back on. That's because I never allow myself a food restriction. It's a food choice. If I want to, I can eat an entire cake. But I'm changing my attitude so that I never *want* to eat the entire cake. With that said, I also allow myself to do whatever I want (food-wise) on Friday. I never really go overboard because I'm allowed to eat whatever I want during the week. For me it's all about choice. If I know I can always choose to eat something, but choose not to for my body, then I never feel like I'm on a diet. I don't know how many times I've said, "Ugh, I'm not even losing anything, I'm just going to give up....wait a minute. What am I giving up? Oh right, NOTHING because I'm eating whatever I want. How frustrating, I can't even give up!" I think giving yourself a "free day" is a great idea. That way you never feel like crying over chocolate (ummm...yeah....I've never done that....*cough*).

nice way of looking at things! i know i've said this before, but "dieting" almost always is looked at as a a quick fix ( diet for a month to lose 10 pounds, etc.. ) and temporary. in order to lose weight long term i feel that it is very important to change your habits for maximum results. [quote:766a1b3a18]After the weight comes off, it will never, ever come back on. food restriction is a tough way to do business. especially if you are looking at the long haul.
