If you're like most of us, you've realized that losing weight is no easy task. It takes a lot of time, effort and behavior modification to lose a substantial or even just a few pounds of extra weight.

The best way to lose weight is through consistent exercise and a healthier diet. Eliminating junk foods and extra calories from foods such as soda, cookies and cakes and replacing them with fruits, vegetables, water or flavored water is typically advised. Lean meats such as skinless chicken, turkey, tuna and pork are superior to fatty meats such as marbled steaks, ground beef, sausages, bacon and hot dogs. Consumption of alcohol should be limited or eliminated. If you must drink, avoid coladas and other libations that contain heavy creams, as they are packed with extra calories.

Another "best way" to lose weight is to consider calories. Calories are the energy units that food provides and 3,500 of them make up a pound of fat. This means in order to lose a pound of fat, your body has to burn off 3,500 calories or energy units. Deficiting calories is another way to lose weight, although extreme dieting methods are NEVER recommended.

If your body has fewer calories going in and you are exercising regularly, your body will have to burn the reserves (fat) that your body is storing, resulting in overall weight loss.

Most doctors say that it's "safe" to lose from one to two pounds a week. This gradual weight loss through exercise and diet will help assure that you don't gain the weight back later. As always, consult your physician before starting a weight loss plan.
